How To Stop Emotional Eating For Good
So how do you stop emotional eating?
Good question. If you've been overeating and binging for years, it may seem hopeless.
You find yourself shovelling down your kids' Halloween candy stash or face down in a bucket of Ben and Jerry's and you think 'What's the point? Why even try?'
The good news is that there's hope. You can learn to stop the binges, the stuffing and the 'food addiction' once you deal with the root of the problem. And the root has nothing to do with the latest diet.
In fact the first thing you should do is Stop Dieting. That doesn't mean you should give up on diets as a weight loss tool forever - however it does mean that a diet will never give you permanent weight loss if the main reason you eat is emotional - to deal with stress, to calm yourself, to pamper yourself, etc.
What is the real root of the problem?
It's this: You're using food to avoid feelings, to cope with life, and maybe even to insulate yourself from life. You're using food as a nurturer, as a best friend that doesn't talk back, as a source of love that you're not getting elsewhere.
Do you see why it's so hard to stop? Emotional overeating is a great coping mechanism when you don't have the psychological skills to take care of yourself.
So what do you do? How do you stop emotional eating?
You stop by learning the skills you need to nurture yourself without food. Learn the skills to live the life you really want, a life you really love - without the crutch of food.(After all, the food doesn't do anything to fix your problems anyways - it just makes things worse!)
When you have these skills, then food doesn't become your lifeline anymore. You don't need it to survive and the extra weight will easily slip away.
The problem with diets is that they insinuate that the food is the problem. But if you're an emotional binge eater, the food is actually not the problem. The problem is your emotional and self-care skills are inadequate. So you have to get to the root and manage your emotions.
Sounds simple right? Well, it is - and it really does work. But most people never learned about self-care skills when they were growing up. They need help. They need the tools and skills from someone qualified to help them.
There are several ways to get this help, depending on the severity of your problems. You can read books on emotional eating. However I've found that many of them give you the facts but don't actually tell you how to heal. So that usually isn't enough to solve the problem.
You can see a therapist who specializes in binge eating or emotional eating. If your eating is out of control to the point that you have a full fledged eating disorder, then this may be the right choice for you. The downside is that this can get expensive.
I personally dealt with my emotional eating issues by taking the Shrink Yourself program online. It's a 12 week online program that was designed by psychiatrist Dr Roger Gould - an expert in emotional eating.
It consists of guided online, private therapy sessions that get to the root of your overeating problem. You'll discover the unique reasons you overeat (everyone is different!) and your triggers.
You'll also learn the skills to handle your emotions in a healthy way - without eating. These are skills you can use for the rest of your life to slim down and feel in control of your eating forever.
While it's not for everone, I found it helped me. And it feels amazing to have the confidence of knowing I'm in control of my weight and my eating. They'll even let you try a free session online, which will tell you a LOT about why you're having these problems
(To try a free online session you can check it out here)
Bottom Line:
No matter what method you choose to stop emotional eating, it’s important to realize that it can be done. There is hope.
But you need to be serious and determined to do it. And you need to deal with the root of the issue - your emotions - instead of just trying yet another diet.
